Idioms and sayings as emoji

Emoji shine at picture-puzzle idioms — half rebus, half inside joke:

  • 🐘🏠 — the elephant in the room
  • ⏰🐦🪱 — the early bird catches the worm
  • 🧊🔨 — break the ice
  • 🐟🌊 — plenty of fish in the sea
  • 🎂🍰 — piece of cake
  • 💸🕳️ — money pit
  • 🧠⛈️ — brainstorm
  • 🫖☕🌪️ — a storm in a teacup

These double as great party puzzles — I turned a batch of them into rounds in my emoji quiz with answers.

Two rules before you copy-paste

Context beats dictionary. 😭 means grief in a condolence thread and “I’m crying laughing” under a meme. When in doubt, mirror the register of the person you’re texting.

Know the false friends. 🙏 is not a high five, 😤 is not fury, 💀 is not morbid, and ✨ is usually ironic. A handful of misread emoji cause most awkward texts — my guide to emoji meanings explained covers the usual suspects.
